I don't remember which canyon this is, but it's one of three at the south end of Lake Powell. Rocks are bleached pale because of the drought over the last few years. Normal coloration is a nice orange-red.

It's pretty, I like the contrast between the rocks and water! This is near Salt Lake City?
:iconaryenne-stock-xx:
Actually, not really. It's at the southern end of the state. Actually, this portion of the lake is in Arizona. It's about a seven hour drive from Salt Lake, towing a boat and everything! This contrast is even more incredible when the lake is full, then you don't have that bleached rock showing.
:iconxxxxblackdragonxxxx:
I see, wow it's really at the end of the state then! That's quite a drive [link] but it looks like such a different landscape from the previous picture with the creek! I bet it is, how much lower is the lake here than what it should be?
:iconaryenne-stock-xx:
Last number I heard, which was a few years ago, is about 150 feet below normal level. Utah went through a drought that lasted about seven or eight years, so all the reservoirs are lower than they should be. We have very few natural lakes out here, most are man-made. Lake Powell has risen some in the last year or two, but not enough in my opinion! There is an island near where our houseboat is docked and, well, right now it isn't an island. So we have to take the long way around to see anything neat. Oh, well. We still take a day and go down a few canyons. You can't go to Lake Powell without exploring canyons! At it's fullest, Lake Powell has more shoreline than the entire western U.S. because of all the channels and canyons.
:iconxxxxblackdragonxxxx:
Woah that's a whole lot more than I thought!! That's too bad :(! Same in Kansas, I don't think we have any natural lakes at all in this state but I'm not sure! Definitely not enough, especially if that island is not longer that! Ugh sounds like less fun that way :[! Is it a cyclical drought? The canyons are always there at least! It sounds and looks like it! That's amazing, I would have never guessed it, it sounds simply amazing!! Now I really want to go! Is it really hot there?
:iconaryenne-stock-xx:
It's very hot in the summer, but during that time water temperature is usually in the sixties. Besides, that's why you have boats with open bows! When it gets hot, go fast! :D I don't know what type of drought, though. A few years ago, weathermen were saying it had been seven years, but I think it's been longer than that. The lake has dropped so much because they continue to use the water without the normal amount of replenishment. Water is sent downstream to Arizona and Mexico, and I think other places nearby get some too. Plus, there's a power plant at Glen Canyon Dam that feeds a lot of California's power. Ah, but oh well. It'll rise eventually! And, I guess, if it doesn't we'll have bigger problems on our plates anyway! ;)
:iconxxxxblackdragonxxxx:
I bet, that sounds comfortable in the winter though! Oh that makes sense now that you mention it, speed and evaporative cooling do go hand in hand :)! Hmm... I bet it's been at least a decade from what I've heard of the area and drought! That's sad though, I hope it rises soon because it could have much larger effects like you say if it's not corrected!
:iconaryenne-stock-xx:
Yeah, it could. Experts would probably say it's all part of global warming. Me, I don't know. It is what it is and you make do, right? I sure hope it rises though. It's risen a little bit in the last few years. We've gotten some good snow the last couple winters, so that's been really good. How good our year will be with water depends on the winter snow we get.
:iconxxxxblackdragonxxxx:
Oh my, that wouldn't be good O_O. I'm with you though, as I do think it is very real but the causes I am not sure of. You're absolutely right though, I think when living things are confronted with change, (as well as some inanimate things too I guess) adaptation almost always compensates in some way, I would like to think! Oh me too, it's very frustrating and even scary to know there are things like this which are for the most part immediately out of our control, although we could make some sort of a difference, but I think nature will ultimately have its way! That's good though, I love snow ^_^! That's better than nothing I suppose, but still a scary thought :[!
